Essential Oil books

There are so many great books on essential oils but what ones are worth reading? Here I list a few that I recommend or that have come highly recommended to me.

The picture above is The Essential Oil Desk Reference book. This is a MUST HAVE. There is so much information of essential oils in general, a section about each YL essential oil and a section on health issues.

This pocket-sized version of the Essential Oils Desk Reference contains selected material from the Desk Reference, including the Personal Usage Guide (which features information and recommended essential oils and blends for over 300 different health topics). It includes safety data, application information, and much more.  ~Description from Amazon.com
This essential oil reference book by D. Gary Young is a must have for those who are serious about therapeutic application of pure essential oils. Dr. Young combines years of scientific research on the use and application of essential oils, and blends it into an easy to use guidebook. This book includes detailed instructions on how to apply the oils, information on Gary Young's journeys across the world, and recipes for 25 special oil blends.~Description from Abundant Health 4 U

Considered cure-alls by Biblical people, healing by prayer and anointment with oils as practiced by Jesus' disciples and early Christians is made practical for us today in this book. Based on both science and scripture. ~Description from Amazon.com
This booklet explains, in simple understandable language, how both physics and chemistry are necessary to explain the ways essential oils work. It explains how the mind interacts with matter through electrons and how the mind can alter molecular shape and how this determines the healing actions that essential oil compounds can have on our bodies. It provides a scientific basis for how and why oils work better with prayer and faith. You can find this and many other essential oil books on the CARE website.
Gary Young is today regarded as one of the world’s foremost experts on essential oils and their distillation. Aromatherapy: the essential beginning is one of his earliest books published. Although, not the encyclopedia of essential oils (that was to come later :-) ), this book is nonetheless an excellent and lucid introduction to essential oils. You don’t need to be a scientist to read this book. ~Description from http://essentialoilsforliving.com/blog/
Combining two decades of professional knowledge with tried-and-true techniques and first-hand testimonials, the author has compiled this insightful and easy to follow guide benefiting both experienced and first-time mothers. In addition, the book contains an introduction to therapeutic-grade essential oils and applications and provides safety information and a section on discerning the quality of essential oils. Every family taking proactive steps to better health should have this resource in their home library. ~Description from Amazon.com
This solidly scientific book is anchored in scripture and easy to understand, It will give you an appreciation of both the scientific and spiritual bases of healing by prayer and anointing with oils.

I love Ningxia Red!

NingXia Red® is a powerful antioxidant drink that contains whole Ningxia wolfberry puree—a super blend of blueberry, aronia, cherry, pomegranate, and plum juices, natural stevia extract, grape seed extract, pure vanilla extract, and orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils. Its health benefits include support from head to toe, via a whole body nutrient infusion. NingXia Red, has been cherished for centuries for its health, energy, and longevity benefits. Whole Ningxia wolfberries and other nutrient-dense fruit juices make NingXia Red the perfect choice for optimizing wellness and stepping up to a whole new level of health.

Two Personal Testimonials about Ningxia Red

About two months ago I got my top six front teeth worked on. About a few days later I got the flu or so I thought. Chills, fever, headaches, temporary muscle aches, irritability, difficulty sleeping, weakness, nausea, diarrhea, and gas. But no one else in my household got it and when you live in a household of 7, well you kinda like to share things. Even the bad. Then I remembered that detox symptoms can mimic flu symptoms. So I was detoxing from the major dental work. At that time I had/have been under a doctors care because of liver enzyme test coming back high. They were testing to see why the the levels were high. I had asked on a online discussion board last year when two of the three tests came back high and a lady had the same issue and it was because of detoxing. Last years ultrasound of internal organs had came back all perfect and the blood work my gastroenterologist had ordered all came back fine. SO when I got my teeth worked on all the bacteria and heavy metals where being removed from my body caused the liver enzymes to spike. During that time though I was feeling really sick. It was bad enough that the dr was threatening to admit me to the hospital. Somewhere I had read that Young Living's Ningxia Red and lemon essential oils would help with detoxing and liver problems. So I started taking the Ningxia Red and a couple drops of the lemon eo and my next blood work showed the levels going down and I started feeling much better. Still need to monitor my blood work but I believed that Ningxia red helped because there was nothing else different that I was trying.

In another way that NR helped was just this past week I have been ill-cough, stuffy nose, tiredness and no energy and in the morning I upped my normal 2 oz of Ningxia Red to 4.5 oz. About an hour after I would take it I noticed I had enough energy to take a shower, get breakfast, do some quick laundry, and do a little homeschooling and blog work. I had energy while being sick. I was also taking some in the evening but figured out that was the reason I couldn't fall asleep fast like I normally would-as soon as my head hit the pillow I would be out and when I stopped taking my dose at night then I was out like a light. I just drank some in the morning for a boost to get some things done while sick.

KEY BENEFITS

~~Seven times more pure therapeutic-grade essential oil—- Carefully selected for their health and flavor profiles, the blend of orange, yuzu, lemon, and tangerine essential oils found in NingXia Red is packed with 93% d-limonene- a potent antioxidant and a marker for bioactivity. Along with NingXia Red’s premium flavor, these essential oils also aid in maintaining the body’s normal cellular function
~~Preferred great taste—The new NingXia Red, now Halal and Kosher certified, contains no artificial sugars and has a unique, balanced flavor profile that captures the pure essence of the Ningxia wolfberry. The natural flavor is further enhanced by zero-calorie stevia (Rebaudioside A), essential oils, plus blueberry, cherry, and aronia juice. In fact, when compared to other similar superfruit beverages in a major university study, the new NingXia Red was preferred by 77% of participants over all other options in a blind taste panel!
~~Long-lasting energy support*—Long-term use of wolfberries (Lycium barbarum) may contribute to agility, longevity, and vitality. In fact, recent studies indicate that drinks containing wolfberry exhibit longer-lasting supportive effects on energy and caloric metabolism. NingXia Red is an easy way to get pure, premium Ningxia wolfberries and experience natural, sustained support for energy without the crashes and harmful side effects of coffee or energy drinks.
~~Fortifies the body and replenishes key nutrients*—The combination of whole wolfberries—the juice, peel, seeds, and fruit—with pomegranate and plum juice delivers vitamins, minerals, carotenoids, and phytonutrients. NingXia Red also contains zeaxanthin, a carotenoid suggested to enhance healthy visual function. Recent studies on the consumption of wolfberries and whole fruit juices recommend 2 to 4 ounces for optimal support.
~~Revitalizing, full-body protection*—The combination of blueberry, grape seed extract, aronia, and pomegranate—some of the world’s most antioxidant-rich fruits—helps increase the S-ORAC level more than 30% over previous formulations. These levels were independently tested and may help defend against damage caused by free radicals.

Ningxia Red Smoothie Recipe

Ningxia Red Smoothies Recipe

Ingredients:

2oz Ningxia Red
1 cup homemade yogurt
1 cup fruit-I like peaches and blueberry-the picture above was raspberries and pineapple.
2-4 oz liquid coconut oil
1 avocado
1 banana
2 drops YL lemon essential oil

Directions:

1. Melt coconut oil. I use hot tap water to run over the CO bottle. Pour into the blender. We use the Vitamix and it really pulverize the ingredients to make them more digestible.

2. Put banana and avocado into the blender and mix very well. The coconut oils will mix with the banana and avocado and will not be clumpy when adding cold ingredients.

3. Add yogurt and fruit and blend well.

4. Add the Ningxia red and lemon oil. Blend well.

5. Pour into glass containers. Must be glass as the oils will eat at the plastic.

6. ENJOY a yummy super healthy smoothie.

Progessence Plus to the rescue

In August and September 2011 I had 2 really early miscarriages. In investigating the cause, I found out I had low progesterone. During the time between ovulation and my period I would take Pro-gest by Emerita just in case of pregnancy since insurance wouldn't cover it unless I got pregnant, not helpful if I couldn't get pregnant in the first place or my body wouldn't sustain it long enough. I hadn't signed up for Young Living yet. I signed up to become a distributor in January 2012 and after hearing testimonials about Progessence Plus by Young Living I researched and realizing some of the symptoms I had were due to low progesterone so I ordered 2 bottles in July. Before starting Progessence Plus, my periods were irregular. They were also more heavy for me then usual. I also had major PMS, unexplained minor anxiety and depression, hot flashes, poor sleep patterns and decrease in libido. I started using it in August 2012 and used it for a week (because my luteal phase was super short). My period actually decrease in heaviness, libido actually started getting better and hot flashes were decreasing. Then in October I didn't use it at all. BIG MISTAKE!!! Boy that month, watch out! Symptoms came back. Then this last cycle I made sure to take the Progessence Plus. So much better. I was calmer with my kids and hubby, hot flashes have stayed away and even feel cool, libido increased, period were regular and less heavy. I wasn't as moody, I was feeling normal. Now I know to keep it in the house.

Safety with Young Living Essential Oils

There are important guidelines to follow when using essential oils, especially if you are unfamiliar with the oils and their benefits. Many guidelines are listed below. However, no list of do’s and don’ts can ever replace common sense. So, start gradually, and find what works best for you and your family.

Guidelines for Safe Use

1. Always keep a bottle of a pure vegetable oil handy when using essential oils. Vegetable oils dilute essential oils if they cause discomfort or skin irritation (water doesn’t). (I always keep a bottle of unrefined coconut oil in my oils bag.)

2. Keep bottles of essential oils tightly closed and store them in a cool location away from light. If stored properly, essential oils will maintain their potency for many years.

3. Keep essential oils out of reach of children. Treat them as you would any product for therapeutic use. If a child or infant swallows an essential oil: Call a Poison Control Center or seek immediate emergency medical attention if necessary. They may tell you to administer a vegetable oil, milk, cream, yogurt, or other safe, oil-soluble liquid.

4. Essential oils rich in menthol should not be used on the throat or neck area of children under 30 months of age.

5. Wait a day or so after using Angelica, bergamot, grapefruit, lemon, orange, tangerine, or other citrus oils before getting out in the sun.

6. Keep essential oils away from the eye area and never put them directly into ears. Do not handle contact lenses or rub eyes with essential oils on your fingers. Oils with high phenol content—oregano, cinnamon, thyme, clove, lemongrass, and bergamot—may damage contacts and will irritate eyes. Some oils may be painful on mucous membranes unless diluted properly. Immediate dilution is strongly recommended if skin becomes painfully irritated or if oil accidentally gets into eyes. Flushing the area with a vegetable oil should minimize discomfort almost immediately.
DO NOT flush with water! Essential oils are oil soluble, not water soluble. Water will only spread the oils over a larger surface, possibly exacerbating the problem

7. Pregnant women should consult a health care professional when starting any type of health program.

8. Epileptics and those with high blood pressure should consult their health care professional before using essential oils. Use caution with hyssop, fennel, basil, wintergreen/birch, nutmeg, rosemary, peppermint, sage, tarragon, and Idaho tansy oils.

9. People with high blood pressure may want to avoid using sage and rosemary.

10. People with allergies should test a small amount of oil on an area of sensitive skin, such as the inside of the upper arm, before applying the oil on other areas. The bottom of the feet is one of the safest, most effective places to use essential oils.

11. Before taking GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe) essential oils internally, dilute one drop of essential oil in one teaspoon of an oil-soluble liquid like honey, olive oil, or milk. Never consume more than a few drops of diluted essential oil per day without the advice of a physician.

12. Do not add undiluted essential oils directly to bath water. Using plain bath gel or Epsom or sea salts as a base for all oils applied to your bath is an excellent way to disperse the oils into the bath water. When essential oils are put directly into bath water without a dispersing agent, they can cause discomfort on sensitive skin because the essential oils float, undiluted, on top of the water.

13. Keep essential oils away from open flames, sparks, or electricity. Some essential oils, including orange, fir, pine, and peppermint are potentially flammable.

14. Skin test an essential oil before using it. Each person’s body is different, so apply oils to a small area first. Apply one oil or blend at a time. When layering oils that are new to you, allow enough time (3 to 5 minutes) for the body to respond before applying a second oil.

15. Read the labels on your oils and research what you’re using. For instance, NEVER take an essential oil internally unless you are certain it is listed as a “supplement” on its label AND that it is a pure, therapeutic grade essential oil.

16. Be careful not to use adulterated or synthetic oils. Some may be toxic. Read more HERE.

17. Do not use peppermint essential on open wounds.

Lemon or Lime Cheesecake

Recipe taken from Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall. Photo mine.

Ingredients:
3 eggs-warm to room temp
1/3 c honey
1 c scd yogurt-dripped
2 c dry curd cottage cheese
2 tsp legal vanilla
lemon or lime juice (optional)***

Directions:

1. Preheat oven to 325*.
2. Bring ingredients up to room temp.
3. In a blender add eggs first for blades to turn freely. Then add the rest of the ingredients.
4. Mix well, stopping to scrap down sides every 15 seconds or so.
5. Grease sides of pan with butter or coconut oil so cheesecake will not stick.
6. Pour mixture in smaller pans, splitting up batter so as to not fill more then half way full. It will rise.
7. Bake for 40 mins or until tops turn a slight brown. Do not open oven during first 30 mins.
8. Take it out of oven and let it cool.
9. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
10. Enjoy.

Notes: When I cooked mine I noticed the center was a little wiggly-that is perfectly fine and actually makes a nice smooth cheesecake in the center but if you overcook it, it becomes dry and crumbly.
After I let it cool, I noticed it was a little watery and just drained it.

***I actually used Young Living Lemon or Lime Essential Oil (only YL-others are not safe to ingest) to flavor it. I used 10 drops and it gave a good flavor-not too strong or weak. But do not eat the whole cheesecake in a few days because lemon is a detoxing oil and you will feel the detox effect if you eat too much of the cheesecake with the oil baked in it. :)
